25 Jul Spain claims European steel recycling crown
Spain is the leading country for steel recycling across Europe, according to the country’s national steel association (Unesid).
More than 75% of steel produced in Spain is recycled, a figure well above the European average of 50%. Globally, only 40% of total steel produced is recycled, Unesid said.
In 2011, Spain recycled 12.5 million tonnes of steel, resulting in huge energy savings, said Unesid
“Steel can be recycled over and over again,” a Unesid spokesman said.
“Even at the end of its life, a steel product can become part of a car, a construction beam or even a washing machine, all without losing its quality and properties.”
Recent deals were heard at about €280 per tonne cfr Northern Spain for HMS 1&2 (80;20) material, around $30 lower than cfr Turkey prices.
